Casteen Taps Two More Faculty Members for Planning Group

October 16, 1998

U niversity of Virginia President John T. Casteen III has appointed two more faculty members to lead a university planning commission charged with monitoring four areas in need of improvement, UVa officials announced Wednesday.

In his State of the University address in March, Casteen told faculty, students and administrators that while UVa remains the top-ranked public university in the country, it does not have balanced strengths.

Casteen said at the time that he would set up a planning commission of students, faculty and staff to monitor the growth of the four target areas: arts, sciences, public service and international programs.

Rebecca Kneedler, associate dean for academic affairs in the Curry School of Education and former chairwoman of the Faculty Senate, will oversee the commission on public service and outreach, officials said Wednesday.

Anita Jones, a professor of computer science, will oversee the commission on science and engineering.

Last month, Casteen appointed Robert Chapel, chairman of the Drama Department, to lead the commission on fine and performing arts. The head of the commission focusing on international activities will be announced in a few weeks, officials said.
